Once again this year I’m lucky enough to sit on the judging panel for the Southern Cross Pet Insurance Pawsies Awards, and I’m always blown away by the depth of connection New Zealanders have with their animals. Whether it’s a dog, a cat, or something more exotic, the bond we share with our pets is the heart of every great entry.

If you’re thinking about submitting yours (and you absolutely should!), here are the top three things I’ll be looking for as a judge—and how you can bring your special relationship to life.

Dog bond

1. Show the story behind your bond

Anyone can describe a cute moment, but what really stands out is the why behind it.

What I’m looking for:

  • Moments that reveal the history behind your connection—how you met, what you’ve been through together, how your pet has shaped your life.
  • Authenticity. Real stories, real feelings, real quirks.
  • A sense of partnership: how you communicate, support each other, or navigate the world as a team.
Dog bond

How to showcase it:

  • Share a short anecdote that captures the essence of your relationship.
  • Choose photos or videos that show your pet’s character, not just their looks.
  • Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable—some of the strongest entries come from honest, heartfelt storytelling.

2. Capture “learning moments” and teamwork

As a behaviourist, I’m especially drawn to entries that highlight the interaction between you and your pet. Great bonds are built on communication, trust, and small daily rituals.

What I’m looking for:

  • Evidence of engaged training, mutual understanding, or co-operative behaviours.
  • Examples where your pet looks to you for guidance—or where you’ve taken the time to understand their needs.
  • Signs of a balanced relationship, where both of you are tuned in to each other’s emotions.
Cat high five

How to showcase it:

  • Include a clip or image that shows you working together—a recall, a trick, a quiet cuddle, an adventure you take side by side.
  • Mention how you support your pet’s wellbeing: enrichment, gentle handling, training you’ve done, or ways you help them feel safe.
  • Show the “in-between” moments: the glances, the tail wags, the purrs, the check-ins. These subtle behaviours speak volumes.
Cat bond

3. Let your pet’s personality shine

The Pawsies are all about celebrating the unique characters in our lives. I want to see who your pet is, not just what they look like.

What I’m looking for:

  • A pet who is truly themselves—confident, quirky, cheeky, tender, or wise.
  • Clear signs of emotional expression: joy, play, calm connection, curiosity.
  • Entrants who embrace their pet’s individuality and let it be the hero of the story.
Cat bond

How to showcase it:

  • Tell us things that reveal your pet’s signature traits—a silly habit, a special skill, a daily routine they adore.
  • Remember: your pet doesn’t need to be the flashiest or most talented. They just need to be special to you.
Cat and Horse

Final tip: Don’t overthink it

Every year, the entries that move me most aren’t the most polished. They’re the ones that feel genuine. A bond isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection.

So be yourself, celebrate your pet, and let your entry reflect the love you share. That’s what makes a Pawsie truly stand out.

If you’re thinking about entering, now’s the time. I can’t wait to meet your extraordinary companions.
